چکیده

Questionnaires are very useful tools when it comes to assessing zoo based animal measures and caretakers of these animals (such as keepers, trainers veterinarians) in the best position provide accurate answers assessments. Our goal was (a) empirically demonstrate utility a welfare questionnaire (b) examine relationship between three constructs: personality, subjective well-being ratings, sample killer whales (Orcinus orca) (n = 26). For this purpose, we applied 4-factor personality structure previously species, 4-item questionnaire, designed 39-item questionnaire. The composed by positive negative indicators related social environmental interactions, physical health condition, presence species-typical stereotypical behaviors, capacity accept situations, relationships with conspecifics humans, among others. Each whale rated an average 12.5 raters. mean interrater reliability for questionnaires high, Principal Components Analysis Regularized Exploratory Factor Analysis, revealed one six factors, respectively. We found some correlations constructs, instance, Extraversion (r 0.62, 95% CI 0.02−0.06) Dominance 0.61, 95 % 0.03−0.09) were associated factor, while negatively Abnormal -0.73, −0.13 −0.06) Nervousness -0.66, 0.06−0.17) showed reliable valid results. Thus, our research represents first empirical evidence cetaceans through use multi-trait Therefore, facilities housing could gradually monitor intervene if needed. Finally, closely resembled previous primates, which indicate possible evolutionary convergence Orders.

Killer whales (Orcinus orca) produce ultrasonic whistles.

This study reports that killer whales, the largest dolphin, produce whistles with the highest fundamental frequencies ever reported in a delphinid. Using wide-band acoustic sampling from both animal-attached (Dtag) and remotely deployed hydrophone arrays, ultrasonic whistles were detected in three Northeast Atlantic populations but not in two Northeast Pacific populations. These results are inc...

Whistle sequences in wild killer whales (Orcinus orca).

Combining different stereotyped vocal signals into specific sequences increases the range of information that can be transferred between individuals. The temporal emission pattern and the behavioral context of vocal sequences have been described in detail for a variety of birds and mammals. Yet, in cetaceans, the study of vocal sequences is just in its infancy. Here, we provide a detailed analy...

Orcinus orca – Killer Whale

Taxonomic notes: Orcinus orca is currently considered a single, cosmopolitan species, however many populations (including some which occur sympatrically) are ecologically, genetically and morphologically distinct (Rice 1998; Ford 2009). Despite such distinction, the global genetic diversity of the species appears low at both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA markers (Hoelzel et al. 2002; Morin et a...

Behavioural responses of killer whales (Orcinus orca) to whale-watching boats: opportunistic observations and experimental approaches

Johnstone Strait provides important summer habitat for the northern resident killer whales Orcinus orca of British Columbia. The site is also an active whale-watching area. A voluntary code of conduct requests that boats do not approach whales closer than 100 m to address perceived, rather than demonstrated, effects of boat traf®c on killer whales. The purpose of the study was to test the relev...

Killer whales (Orcinus orca) face protracted health risks associated with lifetime exposure to PCBs.

Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations declined rapidly in environmental compartments and most biota following implementation of regulations in the 1970s. However, the metabolic recalcitrance of PCBs may delay responses to such declines in large, long-lived species, such as the endangered and highly PCB-contaminated resident killer whales (Orcinus orca) of the Northeastern Pacific Ocean....
